42nd Mersenne Prime Number Discovered!
(Posted by Big Daddy Fayz on 2/18/2005)
Mersenne numbers are numbers of the form Mn = 2^n - 1. Interestingly, this means that Meresenne numbers are simple strings of 1s when represented in binary. For example, M7 = 2^7 - 1 = 127 is a Mersenne number. In fact, since 127 is also prime, 127 is also a Mersenne prime. Before today only 41 were known. But now they discovered the 42nd!

They showed in the original movie that Gimli and Legolas were trying to kill more Uruk-hai than the other as a sort of contest. And at the very start of the Battle at Helms Deep, Gimli had 2 and Legolas already had 19. But even with that much of a head start, at the end of the Battle in the Extended version of the movie, when Gimli asks Legolas how many he's killed, he replies, "42."

Finding Nemo Sticker Book
(Posted by Jenn on 6/11/2003)
Okay, I don't know if this was the "possible 3rd" 42-reference that I mentioned in my previous Finding Nemo 42-sighting, but I got a Sticker Book (just at Albertson's, nowhere special) and it has a little biography of all the different characters, and for Dory, it says: "Dory is very educated. She can read human, speak whale, and understand 42 different fish dialects." There's also a sticker of the address on the diver's mask: "P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney, NSW"

2. The length of time the dentist is expected to take in the bathroom is 4.2 minutes.

Felicity
(Posted by Candace on 5/19/2003)
Watching an old rerun of Felicity: Felicity and Ben had been broken up for like, 5 minutes when he gets with some other chick. Of course, Ben and Felicity get back together in the next few days, but a few weeks later, the chick tells Ben that she's pregnant! (Large gasp here) Ben goes to the chick's apartment because he feels bad about how he reacted when she first told him. What apartment number is she? Do you REALLY need to ask...a big, brass 42 is right on the door!

(Posted by Jenn on 3/4/2003)
According to Vanity Fair's article, Michael Jackson apparently attended a voodoo ritual in Switzerland where a witch doctor promised that Spielberg and twenty-three other people on his "list" would die. (See the article)
Here's the pertinent excerpt from the above cnn.com article:
"Jackson, who underwent a "blood bath" as part of the ritual, then ordered his former business adviser Myung-Ho Lee to wire $150,000 to a bank in Mali for a voodoo chief named Baba, who sacrificed 42 cows for the ceremony, the magazine reported."

Foster & Michelle's Wedding Day
(Posted by Jenn on 1/23/2003)
Ironically enough, I was putting Foster & Michelle's Wedding Day in my little datebook, and it happens to say at the top of each page what week of the year it is. And, you guessed it, October 18th falls on the 42nd week of 2003. Was this a subconscious geekism on Foster's part, or sheer coincidence? Either way, it's pretty cool. :)
Commercial during Smallville

I've never seen it before, but it's this cartoon about, well, undergrads, on some channel last night around 11-ish. Beavis and Butthead serving a purpose?
(Posted by Buddy on 12/10/2002)
I was flicking through the television stations in hope of somehow entertaining myself at 3:23 in the morning. I come across a rare and never to be offered again deal. Beavis and Butthead collection tapes. One has the ability to watch these episodes over and over and over....how many episodes one might ask? well 42 episodes to be exact.

Office Space
(Posted by Jenn on 10/28/2002)
I watched the DVD again on Friday night (after seeing The Ring to try to calm my nerves) and realized that the boss guy at Initech Lumbergh has his 41st birthday (and that's when poor Milton ends up not getting any cake). Could this be another "42 would be too obvious" moment? Or just coincidence? How can there be NO 42 references in Office Space?? And what about Peter's apartment number: 222? Add the first two's together and get 4, then it's like 42!! Okay, now, I'm getting carried away. Anyways... Foster took my Angels one, but that's okay. Giants are still better, and Barry will one day have that ring on his finger!!
Angels
(Posted by Foster on 10/14/2002)
You'll never guess how long it took the Angels to make it to the World Series... 42 seasons! Not a coincidence, I tell you! I hear Troy Glaus' best friend is a superintelligent mouse, and Adam Kennedy is looking to install friendly, talking elevators at Edison Field... the evidence is overwhelming if not total baloney.
Friends & ER
(Posted by Gavin on 10/8/2002)
On Friends last Thursday there was one 42 reference and on ER that same night there were TWO distinct 42 references. I can't remember what they were exactly....but they weren't coincidences. Wait I think I do remember. On Friends Chandler's boss had a 42-point plan and on ER the one doctor had been doing chest pumps for 42 minutes I believe. Can't remember the other one.
Kornshell User Commands on the Web
(Posted by Jenn on 10/8/2002)

Signs
(Posted by Jenn on 9/3/2002)
During the movie, at an especially tense point, someone is watching the news and the newscaster's voice says that a 42-year old woman submitted the following footage. I don't know, maybe that's kind of pushing it, but she didn't have to be 42!!
Super Troopers
(Posted by Jenn on 9/3/2002)
In the movie, one of the state troopers is filling up on gas, and he notices a sign that says if you get 10 gallons of gas, you get a free hot dog. As he's reading the sign, his tank gets full, and it's at 9.133 or something gallons. So he looks around and sees no one, and he starts pumping gas into the garbage can. The camera does a close up when he stops pumping gas, and it's at 10.042 gallons.

(Posted by Jenn on 7/7/2002)
Okay, first, I saw this thing where the number they showed was 42747 or 42474 or something like that, and I'm like, "Hmm, maybe that's a 42 reference," but dismissed it. Then, there was this part where Agent J (Will Smith) talks to this alien dude and says, "Hey, it's been a while. Like what, 5 years?" and the alien replies, "And 42 days." So no coincidence there. :)

And she answers, "Number 42 on the list of things to do in my lifetime is to befriend someone who is difficult to get along with." Yes, that line is indicative of how cheesy the movie was, but I liked it and at least I got a 42-sighting out of it!!

Bytes 2-3: The second word of the file is the TIFF _version number._ This number, 42 (2A in hex), is not to be equated with the current Revision of the TIFF specification. In fact, the TIFF version number (42) has never changed, and probably never will. If it ever does, it means that TIFF has changed in some way so radical that a TIFF reader should give up immediately. The number 42 was chosen for its deep philosophical significance. It can and should be used as additional verification that this is indeed a TIFF file.
