UCLA Identity Theft (Posted by Gavin on 12/12/2006)
Just wanted to let you guys know about this story in case you hadn't already heard: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16169453

I got an email to a very old email address (the one URSA knew about) saying that my information was stolen...and most UCLA people I've spoken to also got the email. Not sure what to do about it....but just wanted to make sure everyone is aware and that it's not just current students who need to be concerned.

Updated KerckhoffPatio Sheep (Posted by Gavin on 5/11/2006)
Over four years after the original "KerckhoffPatio Tray Notification" software was released....I have an update that now refers to the new URL (www.gavinl.com/kerckhoffpatio). Download the following file and save it to your "C:\Program Files\Sheep Go Moo Software\KerckhoffPatio Tray Notification" folder....replacing the existing EXE that's there. New KerckhoffTray.exe. If you have any questions, let me know.

KerckhoffPatio.com has moved! (Posted by Gavin on 5/9/2006)
KerckhoffPatio.com is has moved to www.gavinl.com/KerckhoffPatio. For now the URL will redirect....but that will only last a couple more weeks. Eventually the actual domain KerckhoffPatio.com will go away and you'll have to hit my site directly in order to get there. Anyone who uses the "Kerckhoff Sheep" application should let me know so that I can get them a new version of the program that goes to the new URL. Let me know if there are any questions.

Comment on Afflalo/Florida (Posted by Gavin on 4/4/2006)
From Tim Keown on ESPN.com:

Take nothing away from Florida's national championship. Fine game plan executed to precision. The Gators, however, are going to have to forgive America for not falling in love with them. After watching their brief -- but still too long -- performance in victory, you've got to wonder if it's too much to ask for just a little class.

From Taurean Green's hip-shaking dance in the face of UCLA in the final seconds to Joakim Noah's facial contortions and trash talking, a little bit was enough.

Watching on television, it seems to me they didn't seem much interested in graciousness. They're young, they're emotional, they're competitive, sure, but don't you want to leave everybody with a positive impression?

Remember when UCLA beat Gonzaga in the final seconds, and Adam Morrison stood on the court and cried before the clock ran out, and then collapsed in a heap of despair afterward?

That, for me, was the moment of this tournament, and not because of Morrison. UCLA's Arron Afflalo walked over and helped Morrison up, and afterward he said Morrison is a great player who should be ashamed of nothing.

Afflalo is the same guy who had a terrible game Monday night, but for me he was the star of the tournament.

It's a good thing none of the UCLA players collapsed in a heap Monday night. Somebody might have stepped on them.

opensource.adobe.com Launches (Posted by Foster on 3/1/2005)
Hey everyone... just wanted to give you a peek regarding what I've been doing for the past year or so-- I'm pretty stoked about it-- feel free to check it out!! Blessings, Foster -- For those of you in the C++ development community, Adobe Systems has just reopened opensource.adobe.com. In it you will find a slew of free software that culminates in two libraries: Eve, a dialog auto-layout engine, and Adam, a command parameter modeling engine to manage the complex behaviors of modern-day dialogs. There's also an app called Adobe Begin which demonstrates the two technologies (currently for the Mac only). It is claimed in the library overview that the techonology could solve as much as 40% of major Adobe application bugs (sic)! And now it's available to the open source community for free!

Eat at Chili's on 09/20/2004!! (Posted by Jenn on 9/19/2004)
Some of you might know that Chili's (all of them) has been doing a "create a chili" donation thing for St. Jude's Children's hospital and to raise money for children's cancer research. It's where you donate at least $1 and you color your own "chili" and they put it up on the wall. Well, tomorrow, September 20th (Monday), all the Chili's everywhere are going to take all the money they make during the whole day and donate it all. So if you don't feel like cooking on Monday, GO TO CHILI'S!! :)

3 years ago tomorrow... (Posted by Jenn on 6/18/2004)

Virus Update (Posted by Foster on 3/4/2004)
It wasn't me :) I do all my mail on my Mac, so all this Windows virus hullabaloo isn't on account of something I accidentally double-clicked. One property of these most recent viruses is to spoof where they came from- a lot of the time the detailed header information will reveal the correct source. Thanks for the warning, though, Jenn- we get crap like this at Adobe all the time (they even had to use the company-wide PA system to make an annoucement one day about them.) Blessings! Foster Boboster

You guys are sending viruses! (Posted by Jenn on 2/29/2004)
Just FYI, I've gotten two viruses via email from kp.com members, who I won't name here. FOSTER AND JOSH, it might be worth your while to do a virus scan. And maybe you guys even gave it to each other, I don't know. Warning to others, both of the viruses were .zip files (ddbadb.zip from Foster and acadcbbba.zip from Josh). The subjects were "Melissa" and "Daily activity report" respectively. Luckily I got Josh's first and IBM caught and deleted it before I got it. It says it's the WORM_BAGLE.C virus and it was found in a file called xirimaja.exe, that was in the .zip file. Watch out for these things, guys!!

Universe == Finite (Posted by Jenn on 10/9/2003)
According to this news article on cnn, the universe is not infinite after all. So what's going to happen to that "U" we used to have to write on our diagrams with like, sets, subsets, and Venn diagrams?? Will students have to write the infinity sign instead?? Anyway, check it out: http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/space/10/09/universe.soccer.ball.reut/index.html

I've studied in that room! (Granted, it was brief. OK, it was a crossword) (Posted by Foster on 10/6/2003)
Kerckhoff patio (the real one) was the scene of a crime the other day... someone trying to swipe those patio chairs? Possibly. http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?id=25550 I don't know how long the link will last, so get it while it's hot!

Turns out rice ain't so bad after all... (Posted by Foster on 7/15/2003)
I found an article that made me think of this last weekend's wedding... who got married? ;) Anyhow, it made me smile, because as we were being dished out bird seed to catapault at the newlyweds we all remarked at how throwing rice will off our fine feathered friends. I sit corrected.

Internet Explorer Favorite Icon (Posted by Gavin on 2/24/2003)
Not a big deal at all.....but if you add KerckhoffPatio.com to your favorites (if it's already there you might need to re-add it) you should get a little sheep icon next to the favorite instead of the traditional IE web page icon. :-)

JAKUB AND SUMMER'S BIG NEWS (Posted by Jason on 2/1/2003)

He proposed at the Chart House in Malibu(amazing Ocean view) where he had flowers waiting for her. I am very happy for them both and I wish them all the happiness in the world. Congratulations Jakub and Summer!!

Petition to save California Education (Posted by Jenn on 1/31/2003)

Please, go to this site and sign this petition! There is a proposal out there to cut $845 million from the education budget to pay for the $33 billion California deficit. This affects all education levels, from kindergarten through colleges and universities. My own elementary school is looking at closing down along with another school in the district, and I know that tuition to public colleges are already being planned to increase considerably as early as next quarter. Class sizes will increase by up to twofold (meaning elementary classes could get up to 80 kids per class), up to 30% of teachers will be laid off, and soon it will become cheaper to send kids to out-of-state schools. How can we let education drop in priority this much when at the same time, schools are being asked for increased accountability and higher standards in the children?!

So please, if you agree with me, take the 30 seconds it takes to fill out the petition at this site. And please tell everyone you know who cares about education and the future of children (us included) about this petition. We have to at least get the word out there and let people decide if they're with us or against us. Thanks!

MICHELLE AND FOSTER'S BIG NEWS (Posted by Foster on 10/16/2002)
The time has come! Michelle and I were officially engaged as of 6:20pm on October 15, 2002. I took her up to Malibu and proposed to her over a sunset on a beachfront mansion, then met up with her mom, dad, brother, sister, and some people from my church for a meal and some quaint fellowship... it was quite groovy. So it's official now, it's really on, and we'll keep you all updated with everything. It's late, I'm delirious from a day of scheming, so I'm off... I love you, Michelle!!

I love you guys (Posted by Jenn on 9/11/2002)
I just wanted to tell you, in light of today and the tragedy that happened a year ago, that I love you all. You're all very important to me, even though we're scattered all over the place. I am thinking about you today and about how nice it would be to see every one of you again in the future.

CANDACE AND MIKE'S BIG NEWS (Posted by Mike on 8/5/2002)
We have happy news to share with the Kerckhoff Crew: We're engaged! It happened late last night as we returned from Candace's best friend's wedding. (She caught the bride's bouquet - damn that actually works!) =) When we used to go on dates in high school, we would sit out on the porch and talk. It was also where we had our first kiss. It was out on the porch that Mikey got down on one knee and FINALLY popped the question! j/k We're so happy and just wanted to share it with all of you!

Pirates of Penzance (Posted by Josh on 7/10/2002)
As bad as it might be, I figure that everyone would be mad at me if I didn't atleast mention the fact that I am in a show. The show is sunday nights at 7 pm at the westchester playhouse in the hood(well westchester to be exact). It starts July 14 and runs till Aug 4 (that's 4 performances for you non-math people =) ). it's 12 bucks if you want to come. The website for more info is www.kentwoodplayers.org and then go to the musical section.

If you've never used ESPN fantasy games before, you have to sign up as a member first, then go to the tournament challenge and join the group. The group name is The Kerckhoff Family, and the password is bruins. If you have any questions for me, email me at thedon@kerckhoffpatio.com or derek@uclalumni.net. Hope to see you all in the game!

HP & UCLA get nanotech patent (Posted by Jenn on 1/25/2002)
HP & UCLA get nanotech patent
How many chips on the head of a pin?

When it comes to chips, small is big. IBM and other chipbuilders are racing to develop ever-smaller chips using transistors and wiring no bigger or thicker than a molecule. Hewlett-Packard and the University of California recently announced they were awarded a patent in November for a way to pack multiple functions onto a single nanochip. The process involves using electrical charges to make virtual cuts in nanowires to effectively vary their lengths, mimicking the circuitry in existing computers.

The research was partly funded by the US Defense Department. The federal government is spending $604 million to support research in the field. One of the many goals of nanotech research is the development of wearable computers to provide military personnel in the field with instant information and state-of-the-art capabilities.

Experts welcomed the HP announcement, saying this appears to be an important step, but are waiting for HP to publish its work so that it can be subjected to independent peer review for verification.

Kerckhoff goes to Hawaii?? (Posted by Jenn on 1/14/2002)
So I was sitting at work, minding my own business, when an IM conversation between me and Gavin was started. We started talking about our vacation days at our respective companies and such, and eventually it came up that Gavin has never been to Hawaii. Well, Jason and I were hoping to be able to plan a trip to Hawaii late in the summer this year (not for very long 'cause I don't have many vacation days), maybe after the semester schools are back in school, so that it wouldn't be too hot and maybe less crowded/expensive. In any case, that's when Gavin and I thought about how abso-freakin-lutely awesome it would be if we got a group of Kerckhoffians to go to Hawaii together!! What if we could get a group rate?? Can you imagine, all of our sun-deprived bodies gleaming on the black sand beaches of Maui, or walking the perimeter of Diamond Head on Oahu? Snorkeling in the 80-degree waters, or coming within feet of lava on the big island? Taking boat tours through "Jurassic Park" on Kauai, or learning the hula at a real live luau?? Just think about it. Maybe we can get a bunch of people together. You can't possibly think that this wouldn't be the most awesome trip in the history of Kerckhoff!! Who's in???? [Note from Gavin: Use the Discussion Board link on the left to post your response to Jenn's idea.]

Stories Are Here!!! (Posted by Gavin on 12/5/2001)
Use the "Stories" link on the left side of the page to go to the Stories menu. From there you can respond to an existing story, start a new story, or read finished stories (as soon as they're available). There are a maximum of five stories in process at any one time, and only two can be started by any one person. Have fun and if you find any bugs, please let me know!!! Also, a big thanks to Mike D for his help coding Stories!!
